While driving around yesterday, I realized that almost every time I see a Yaris T-sport or TS, it is being driven by older people, say 65+. I get the normal Yaris is mainly bought by people of this category, at least over here in the Netherlands that is. But I can’t really get why older people would buy the sporty version, which Toyota intended for young people. It’s not like the usual granddad/grandma needs a 133 hp city car which only weighs about 1000 kgs (TS), or 106 hp on 900 kgs for the older T-sport. Am I missing something about these maybe, that makes them the ultimate old peoples car?

By the way, most of them now move on to the Yaris Hybrid, which is kinda logical since it is marketed with a “free automatic”(which is no real automatic but just the Prius c e-CVT drive train), and is cheaper on the fuel.

Probably got upsold at the dealer and/or wanted the top spec version of what they were buying. Probably the same reason many have hybrids now.

Hmm, you could be right, I remember once seeing a car salesman comparing a normal Yaris to a Hybrid Yaris with older customers, and they were only talking about trim colours and such small differences, while the two are completely different cars. So it could have gone the same way with TS, convincing people to buy them using those led rear lights as an argument.

This, or maybe these are what they tend to have on the lot?

Must be a Dutch thing. Every Yaris I see here is the basic one or sometimes the hybrid.

We don’t really do a lot of sales from the lot here in the Netherlands, except for second-hand cars. Since most dealers only have a very small stock consisting of rapid selling models, and the majority of new cars is build to order form the factory.

Yeah, I guess we’re a weird bunch over here. Though I cannot see why people would pay more, for a kinda useless car. That is a very un-Dutch thing to do however, especially seeing these people grew up after the war, so they would be even more money conscious than the average Dutchguy.

Wait, are you saying ‘boomers are frugal? They’re the most typical locust plague generation the world has ever seen (in my lifetime) .

But, to be more serious, I guess these people bought the ‘sporty’ Yarii to feel ‘young’. Many older people want to feel and be perceived younger.

My grandfather (born: 1925) owns a Yaris as well. One with a bigger than stock engine, but not a sporty version.

We don’t get a sporty Yaris in the States. Or the Yaris Hybrid (although this kind of looks like the Prius-C to me). I actually wouldn’t mind a legit sporty version of a Yaris/Fit/Versa. It’s something this segment needs.

Sadly they’ve dropped the sporty version when the current generation of the Yaris was introduced in 2011. The only sporty thing Toyota sells here right now is the GT86, the rest is mostly Hybrids. With the Yaris Hybrid being our version of the Prius-C. You’re right totally right, small cars need sporty versions, but sadly those never sell enough to keep around.

Well, maybe I over generalized a bit, but most ‘boomers I know are quite frugal.

I get older people want to be perceived younger, but buying a Yaris still is an old people choice, they could have also gotten a Polo or a Clio for instance, but maybe older people don’t realise this.

I love the first gen Yaris, it’s like a little bulldog. The turbo engine’s so cute and tiny, and it’d probably drop right into my xB.
